New insects effective against Tuta Absoluta

Three new paracitoides against Tuta absoluta have been  unvailed in Lecern during the IBMA annual meeting last week. Diadegma ledicola, Necremnus tidius and Necremnus artynes, have emerged as the best performing paracitoids after a year long screening.

The screening which was conducted by Bioplanet in four Italian regions took over a year has resulted in the identification of many paracitoids against Tuta absoluta. However, Diadegma ledicola, Necremnus tidius and Necremnus artynes, have emerged as the best performing paracitoids.

The first paracetoid is an endophagous parasitoid which lays the eggs inside the larvae of the leaf miner Tuta absoluta, while the other two, which belong to the family Eulophidae, are both larval ectoparasitoids as they put the egg inside the leaf mine, close to the larva, after having paralyzed it by means of a toxin.

Both Necremnus species in the first tests showed a level of control at around 70% of the Tuta population, Mass rearing of the new parasitoids started and marketing expected to start in February 2011

Earlier this summer researchers from the National commission for scientific research in Libya have collected Tuta absoluta larvea paricitised with Necremnus artynes in greenhouse close to the capital Tripoli. The identitiy of the paracitoid was later confirmed by the experts of the National histroy Meusium in London.
